History

Curriculum Lead: Will Medlock

At Howard Junior School, we believe that all of our pupils should have the opportunity to understand some of the most significant events that have shaped the world they exist in today. We teach the students about cause and consequence, encouraging them to engage with and relate to the actions of people in the past to make their lessons more meaningful.

History at our school is linked wherever possible to the locality in which the children live in, helping them to understand that the effects of events worldwide can have lasting impacts on their environment. Our History lessons aim to inspire curiosity about some of the more abstract concepts within the subject, such as empire and civilisation. Engaging in a range of sources and evidence will also allow the students to understand how these elements shape our view of the past and why multiple sources are useful for understanding the reality of past events.

In seeking to strengthen students' understanding of chronology, they are exposed to events from a range of periods; the concept of periods of time overlapping is also a fundamental part of what we hope to instil in their learning.
