    Our morning activities this week have been focused on brushing up on our basic writing skills in preparation for our final writing of the term.  Handwriting has also been in sharp focus.

    Elsewhere in the curriculum we have been studying the following subjects:

    Maths – Ratio and scale

    English – We completed our independent write.

    Guided reading – focused on retrieval questions 

    Science and History – end of unit assessments

  • Summer 1 week 5

    It has been SATS week and our Year 6 pupils have finally had the chance to put all their hard work into practise.  They have come in early every day to have a social breakfast to help with any nerves before putting their all into each session. Great work Year 6. 

    Year 5 have been working hard too and have thrown themselves into finding out more about earthquakes in New Zealand and having our minds blown by how small our planet and solar system are compared to the supercluster galaxies and the universe.

    Elsewhere in the curriculum 

    Maths – Year 5 revisited arithmetic papers.

    English - started our independent write based on the book The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.

    Science – We now understand just how small our planet is in comparison to the rest of the universe.

    History – The role of child labour and its dangers in the Industrial Revolution.

    RHE – Online gaming and how to stay safe.

    Geography – New Zealand and its position in the Ring of Fire and the impact of earthquakes

  • SUMMER 1 WEEK 4

    We are halfway through the term and are finding history and the exploration of the Industrial Revolution fascinating. We have tried to recreate the action of a steam engine using an empty bottle, a balloon, a straw and a cup. We had to use our imagination, but we all had a much better understanding by the end of the day. 

    Maths - Ratio

    English – We have made a start on planning our independent writing.

    Science – The phases of the moon 

    History – The importance of coal and iron 

    Geography – The position of New Zealand across fault lines and the impact of earthquakes

    Guided Reading – The theme has been dragons as we look at retrieval questions

    PE - Football 

    Handwriting – Year 5 /6 statutory spelling words

    We are still reeling from our visit from the planetarium and space is still very much on our minds.  This week we studied the planets and learnt the correct order of our solar system from the sun. 

    Elsewhere in the curriculum we studied:

    Maths – fractions, decimals and percentages

    English – Fred's story took a turn when they had to go foraging for food.

    History – The cotton mills and James Watts' invention of the steam engine

    Geography – We stayed in New Zealand and learnt more about their customs and native Maori people

    Guided reading comprehension, retrieval and inference

    PSHE – Self-belief and esteem

    PE - Football

  • sUMMER 1 WEEK 2

    Out of this world! 

    This week year 5/6 took a trip into space when Star Lincs brought their mobile planetarium to school. The exciting visual display of the night sky brought our Astronomy topic a little closer. We discovered that the Great Red Spot on Jupiter is actually a storm. It covers an area far greater than our planet. We also learnt that gravity keeps all planets orbiting the sun. 

    Elsewhere in the curriculum we covered:

    Maths: Division of fractions

    English: Figurative language as our main character 'Fred' in The Explorers, seeks to lead his friends out of the Amazon rainforest.

    Guided Reading: Learning new vocabulary and vocabulary retrieval 

    Science: Astronomy

    History: Cotton Spinning during the Industrial Revolution and the invention of the Water Frame by Richard Arkwright.

    Geography: New Zealand and the lives and customs of the native Maori people. We particularly enjoyed the Haka.

    RSHE: We identified ways to look after our mental health and had some very healthy class debates.

    PE: Tennis

    A new term means new topics and new opportunities around every corner. SAT's preparation took over the timetable for our Year 6 cohort and the children have done very well, but elsewhere in the curriculum, we have been studying: 

    English: Our text driver this term is Explorer by Katherine Rundell

    Guided Reading: A recap of inference questions

    Science: Astronomy and the Big Bang Theory. There was much excitement about the arrival of the planetarium next week.

    History: The industrial revolution  - a move from cottage industry to mass manufacturing

    Geography: A study of New Zealand

    P.E: Tennis

    It's the last week of a busy term, and we will be full steam ahead until the very last lesson Friday, trying to fit in as much learning as we can! 

    This week our curriculum has covered:

    English – We have finished our independent writing and included dialogue, adverbials, metaphors and feelings.

    Maths – Using cubes to help us compare the volume of compound shapes

    Guided reading – Practising 3 mark questions 

    Science – Finishing up our experiment with friction

    History – Assessment on the Transatlantic Slave Trade

    Geography – Assessment of Australia

    PE - Rugby and Basketball

    PSHE - Understanding eating habits

    As I type, the Macarena is blaring through the classroom windows as the children celebrate Rose Nose Day on the playground.  I am pleased to announce that it has been a week full of fun, learning and using our growth mindset to help with new topics.

    This week we have been learning about:

    Maths – Volume of cubes and cubiods

    English – Finished our final sentence stacking lesson and plotted out narrative map

    Guided reading – Graphic stories were the basis for our retrieval practice.

    Science – Forces and friction are still under investigation.

    History – A study of the slave abolitionist Thomas Clarkson

    Geography – Biomes of Australia

    RSHE – The dangers of alcohol on the body

    PE – Baskball

  • Spring 2 WEEK 3

    This week we welcomed Rock Kidz into school. Rock Kidz gives Primary Schools all over the UK the opportunity to raise the profile of well-being and PSHE in their community through the power of music. The first session in the morning culminated in a Dance Battle between the year 5/6 teachers, who gave it their all and the pupils. After an audience vote and some stiff competition, a pupil from 5/6H won – whoop whoop!

     

    Elsewhere in the curriculum we studied:

    Maths – areas of triangles

    English – we focused on dialogue, adverbial phrases and personification as we continued our sentence stacking.

    Guided reading – our retrieval and inference centred around the work of J. K. Rowling

    History – we continued to look into the slave trade and wrote a letter home explaining life on the plantations

    Science – a secret mission had us helping Jamie Bond work out which surface gives him the best grip as we delve deeper into forces.

    Geography – looking further away from home, we explored the regions and cities that make up Australia.

  • sPRING 2 wEEK 2

    Early March always welcomes World Book Day and dressed as our favourite book characters we took part in a Live Lesson with BBC Bitesized. We packed our passports and took off on a journey of discovery as we explored different genres of writing, passed on tips for top reads and shared what our next big read will be.

    Maths - Area of rectilinear and compound shapes

    English - Sentence work around the book Gorilla

    Guided Reading - Our planet

    Science - Forces: push / pull,  increase in speed and decrease in speed, change of direction and changes in shape

    History - To understand the journey of The Middle Passage 

    Geography - Understanding the history of Australia 

    RSHE - The effects of alcohol

  • Spring 2 Week 1

    Spring has sprung in 5/6 H, and we have settled well into the new term.  The first week back is always filled with excitement as we find out our curriculum for the weeks ahead.

    Maths - Perimeter and area

    English - our new text driver for this term is Gorilla

    Guided reading - we were introduced to Sunshine Simpson as we explored new vocabulary, retrieved answers and applied our inference skills.

    Science – Forces, specifically air resistance when we explored how parachutes work.

    History - Transatlantic Slave Trade

    Geography - Australia

    RSHE - Vaping and the its effects

    P.E. - Baskball recap

  • Spring 1 Week 1

    We sledged and slipped our way into the new term, with everyone present and correct in 5/6H. Full of snow stories and excitement,  we looked longingly over our snowy playground, slightly despondent that, for safety reasons, it was off limits. However, a new term brings new learning, and we have thrown ourselves into the new curriculum.

    Maths – A recap of 4 x 2 multiplication

    Science – Living things and their habitat

    History – The British Empire
