We use the Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up Programme for teaching Phonics. As soon as children enter Year 3, we assess all Year 3s to determine if a Phonics intervention is required. Children are placed into either a Phase 2, Phase 3, Phase 4 or Phase 5 Phonics group. Phonics is taught four times a week in 20-minute sessions. Whilst guided reading is being taught, Phonics takes place. Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4 groups are assessed every four weeks to see if progress has been made and if children can move up through groups. Phase 5 lasts for fourteen weeks when an exit assessment is completed to see if children can read 90+ words per minute.
